Abstract
Muanjai P, Srijunto W, Namsawang J. Immediate Effects of High-Intensity Interval Training with Punching, Kicking, or Stretching Exercise on Physical Function in Healthy Young and Older Adults. JEPonline 2021;24(5):10-22. The present study investigated the immediate effects of HIIT with Muay Thai on physical function. Thirty-four physically active young adults (n = 17, age 21.4 [+ or -] 1.1 yrs) and older adults (n = 17, age 68.1 [+ or -] 3.3 yrs) repeatedly performed HIIT punching, HIIT kicking, and control stretching exercises 7 days apart. Feeling scale, sit and reach test (S&R), reaching test, five-time sit to stand (5TSTS), time up and go (TUG), and 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were measured before and immediately after exercise. S&R acutely increased after stretching in both age groups (P< 0.05), and reaching distance increased in older adults. There was an improvement in 5TSTS after all exercises in young adults, but only after HIIT punching in older adults. After HIIT kicking, TUG improved in the older and young adults after HIIT punching; whereas, 6MWT was not altered after any exercise. For both groups, results of the S&R test were improved after stretching compared with HIIT kicking or punching, and a shorter time for TUG was seen following HIIT kicking compared with stretching (P Key Words: HIIT, Muay Thai, Older Adult, Stretching Exercise
