Abstract
Experimental analysis of the roles of hepatocyte growth factor scatter factor (HGF SF) and met receptor in metanephric kidney development reveals that met and (HGF SF) genes colocalize in the mesenchymal cells during the early embryonic stages. Both met and HGF SF have an autocrine or paracrine role in the growth and survival of the mesenchymal cells and in the transition from mesenchyme to epithelium during nephrogenesis. Anti-HGF SF antibodies block mesenchymal cell differentiation, elevate cell death and disrupt ureteric bud morphogenesis.
