Abstract
Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis of the influence of diabetes on renal and microvascular insulin-responsive glucose transporter GLUT4 expression and glucose intake in rats shows that experimental diabetes reduces GLUT4 polypeptide and mRNA expressions, and glucose intake in the rats. The low glucose intake level indicates the presence of only a few glucose transporters in the diabetic cells. Reduced renal GLUT4 expression plays a role in the hypertension and hyperfiltration in glomerular cells during early diabetes.
