Abstract
Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) are regulatory peptides that have distinct localizations in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are believed to function as neurotransmitters, regulators of energy metabolism and neuronal survival and as hormones. Various types of receptors for both these peptides have been described, and further investigations have isolated genes cloning for these various receptors. These clones can now be used to confirm or disprove the postulated physiological roles of PACAP and VIP.
