Abstract
Primary squeal-mode vibration in airplane brake systems was investigated. System stability was studied by obtaining the eigenvalues of linearized perturbation formulas at each steady-state operating point of the nonlinear system. The nonlinear squeal model revealed that system instability can occur with constant friction coefficient and that system stability declines with increasing brake-friction coefficient. The appropriate choice of brake heat stack mechanical attributes and design geometry can provide a stable system.
