Abstract
In relativistic fluid dynamics the momentum density of a fluid element consists of two terms--one that depends on the proper density and velocity of the element and another that depends on its proper pressure and velocity. The usual way in which this result is displayed as a second rank tensor does not yield much insight into the origin of the pressure term and is not likely to be of pedagogical value in most undergraduate physics courses. I present a minimal model that offers some insight into the origin of the pressure term in the momentum density. [DOI: 10.1119/1.3081105]
