Environmental ethics examines the relationship between human beings and nature from the moral perspective. It is also a kind of ethics arising from a concern with an earth which is on the verge of losing balance. Environmental ethics originated at the end of the 1940s. Since the 1970s, great progress has been made in environmental ethics. This article elaborates upon environmental ethics in three respects: the origin of environmental ethics, the call of environmental ethics for people to shed anthropocentrism, and moral principles and norms of environmental ethics. The basic moral principles of environmental ethics include: (1) The principle of ecological holism championing the equilibrium of ecological system; (2) The principle of justice in interest allocation; (3) The norm with regard to loving and making friends with nature; (4) The norm of reasonable consumption; (5) The norm of harnessing resources in a reasonable manner; (6) The norm of preserving peace; (7) The norm of population control; and (8) The norm of moderate development.
