Abstract
The utilization of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify bacterial genes from uninoculated surface and subsurface sediments is discussed. Bacterial strains for the experiment were drived from Pseudomonas putida and was subjected to a napthalene-contaminated field site. DNA extraction with gel electrophoresis was used to render the bacteria amplifiable by PCR. The utility of PCR for studies on function- and taxon specific DNA was established.
