Abstract
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy occurs in females due to the detrimental influences of sex hormones on liver mitochondria. The sex hormones produce a 54 to 77% increase in state 4 respiration and around 34% decrease in fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial protein recovery and mitochondrial uptake. Several ultrastructural lesions occur in the mitochondria due to these sex hormones.
