Abstract
Research was conducted to examine the role of cardiac enkephalins by determining the developmental and regional distribution of preproenkephalin mRNA and its regulation in the heart. Methodologies used were Northern blotting and in situ hybridization. Results indicate that the left ventricle might be an endocrine organ as well as a sensor of hemodynamic load that supplies enkephalins to the body under conditions of increased wall stress.
