Abstract
The popular singer Randy Newman is liked by his fans and contemporaries but has not achieved the stardom that he aspires for because of his failure to adopt the popular lyric mode. Newman follows the dramatic mode for his songs, simulating the Victorian form of dramatic monologue set to music. His songs are about anti-romantic and unheroic models that music lovers have difficulty sympathizing with and therefore his music is less appealing to the masses.
