Abstract
A new study of substance abuse disorders in children and adolescents confirmed that co-morbid psychopathology is common among drug- and alcohol-abusing young people. The study concerned 275 children of whom 19, or 7%, were diagnosed as having a substance abuse-related psychiatric disorder. The additional finding that 17 of the 19, or 89%, had previously received diagnoses of other psychiatric disorders indicated a high prevalence for these disorders among young substance abusers. Moreover, the finding that 30% of the 19 had not given up their drug abuse within three years of the first diagnosis shows that the disorders are chronic.
