Abstract
The pelA gene from the bacterium Azospirillum irakense was characterized by isolating it through heterologous expression in Escherichia coli. Analysis of the amino acid sequence of pelA showed no homology with other known pectinases, suggesting that it belongs to a new pectate lyase family. PelA was also observed to have an alkaline pH optimum and require Ca2+ for its activity. Its expression is induced by pectin.
