Abstract
The interaction between a standard silicon nitride microfabricated atomic force microscope stylus and a glass surface in water is probed. Discrete adhesive interactions of 1 x 10(super -11) N are observed. These may be due to the differences in the number of hydrogen bonds formed between the surfaces during contact. On the other hand, these interactions may be due to the degeneration of the continuum properties of water near surfaces.
