Abstract
The cDNA coding for the 1, 4-dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channel alpha-2 subunit was isolated from a rat hippocampus cDNA library. Sequence analysis showed that the clone codes for a protein of 1,091 amino acids and has a 95% identity with the alpha-2 subunit of the rabbit skeletal muscle. The major difference between these two proteins lies in an insertion and a deletion in the region between the transmembrane domains 1 and 2. The high degree of homology and distribution of these alpha-2 variants suggest that they are transcribed from a single gene, but differ by alternative spicing of the primary transcript.
