Apparel retailers experienced strong sales results in the first quarter of 1997, with analysts expecting continued market strength. The Women's Wear Daily survey revealed a 37.6% profit increase on a sales gain of 6.5% for the 66 apparel retailers polled. Analysts are also predicting continued solid performance in the next quarter despite wariness due to poor weather in May, slight decrease in sales, and higher inventories. Some say increase temperatures in many regions will inspire consumers to go shopping.
