Abstract
The mechanisms of membrane-bound leukocyte elastase expression were analyzed to determine the role of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and platelet-activating factor (PAF). The cell surface expression of human leukocyte elastase (HLE) was elevated in a dose- and time-dependent manner during the priming of polymorphonuclear neutrophils with TNF-alpha and PAF. Furthermore, stimulation of HLE expression was also induced by the administration of IL-8 or N-formyl-leucyl-methionyl-phenylalanine.
