Abstract
Using the Multidimensional Model of Sport Psychology Service Provisions as a framework, we investigated the influence of antecedent variables (personality, expectations about working with a sports consultant, and race) among high school athletes 'on their attitudes towards sport psychology consulting. A sample of 187 high school athletes from three Midwestern high schools completed the Sport Psychology Attitudes-Revised form, the Disclosure Expectation Scale, and a Big Five Personality Inventory. Linear regression analyses revealed anticipated risks predicted negative attitudes towards consulting, while anticipated benefits and athletes 'personality characteristics predicted positive attitudes. A MANOVA analysis revealed that racial minority athletes had a higher preference for working with a consultant of a similar racial background as compared to non-Hispanic white athletes. Results highlight important factors that impact utilization of sport consultation services and possible reasons athletes may not use services.
