Marta Maciejewska discusses two films from the 1970s. The Hourglass Sanatorium (Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą) by Wojciech Jerzy Has and Filip Bajon's Aria for an Athlete (Aria dla atlety) as showing the end of bygone culture. She discusses the political, social, and economic conditions of that period, points out that Has's film was made at the beginning of that decade, while Bajon's – at its end. Both films are presented as creative, appealing to the imagination, the inner world, symbolism, showing the end of old cultures in two ways: in Has's film through an oneiric universe, timelessness, sentimental reference to the tradition that has passed away, and in Bajon's work – by referring to a true story, the mood of fin de siecle, modernist bohemia.
