Abstract
This is a lithograph print fo a formal animal portrait, 'The Castle Howard Oxen', painted in 1840 by H. Strafford. The lithograph was drawn on stone by J. W. Giles, and the print was done by C. Hullmandel, of London. It was published John Moore, printseller to the Duke of Orleans. The sub-title on the print reads: 'Bred and Fed by the Earl of Carlisle at Castle Howard Yorkshire, under the superintendence of Mr Henderson. These celebrated animals were by his Lordship's Bull Rockingham 2550. The one in profile obtained the first prize at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society show held at York in 1838 then 4 years old.' It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.
