Original pencil drawing by James Skene depicting the headquarters of the City Guard in Edinburgh's High Street as mentioned in chapter 5 of Scott's novel The Heart of Mid-Lothian. This drawing was subsequently etched for Skene's A Series of Sketches of the Existing Localities of the Waverley Novels (Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1829). It also shows the Tron Kirk and a group of buildings, including the Black Turnpike, demolished to permit the building of the South Bridge in 1786.
