Abstract
The Area is a 25 minute dance film by Rionach Ní Néill and Joe Lee made in collaboration with Ciotog and the Macushla Dance Club for over 50s. People who love to dance. The Area film was funded by the Arts Council and was completed in 2013. The idea for the project initially came from Rionach Ní Néill who wanted to make a film that explored the idea of the Macushla’s love of dance and their relationship to their native city. The idea appealed to film maker Joe Lee as it presented the opportunity to take a look at other ways of telling stories about the city. The idea was that the film would explore the groups relationship to both dance and the lives and places that members of the group lived in. In a sense the group dance their city in the film. The Area was shot entirely on location in Dublin and evolved out of two separate shoots that took place in 2012/13. It was first screened in the Odeon Cinema at the Point Dublin in the Autumn 2013. The film permiered outside of Ireland at the prestigious Dance on Film, in the Lincoln Centre New York in Jan 2014. It has screened at Cinedans Amsterdam, Cinedans Ankara Turkey, Container Dance Film Festival Italy, In Shadow, Lisbon, LightMoves Limerick, American Screendance Festival, Oklahoma Dance Film Festival, Sao Carlos Dance Film Festival, Brazil and Choreoscope International Dance Film Festival Barcelona 2015.
