Abstract
This report details the results of a fluxgate gracliometer survey in the townland of Ballinvinny South situated approximately 5km southwest of Watergrasshill, in Co. Cork (Ordnance Survey 6" County Series map sheet number 64). The survey was undertaken from the 31st July and the 4th of August 2000. This work was commissioned by, Ms Sheila Lane (Archaeological Consultant) in order to investigate the ture of possible sub-surface archaeological remains in a field that forms part of the proposed new N8 road corridor (Fig.l ). The land9wners, Mr Conor Lynch and Ms Philomena Lynch, report the traditional belief of the former existence of a 'fort' that was apparently removed by their grandfather. The field has been subject to extensive cultivation over the years but is, at present, uilder pasture. Though displaying a number of humps and hollows there are no immediately obvious surface indications of archaeological features. There is, of course, the possibility of undisturbed archaeological remains below the plough zone horizon which may display little or no surface expression The use of magnetometry (in this instance fluxgate gradiometry) is commonly considered to be a primary archaeogeophysical technique employed in such instances to identify sub-surface features of potential archaeological significance. It is a relatively rapid, non-invasive and cost-effective technique that can identify targets for further investigation and so aid in the formulation of a streamlined and cost-effective excavation strategy.
