Abstract
In this essay the author makes an effort to highlight the importance and influence of Russia's new political elite, the financial oligarchs who emerged from the ruins of Soviet communism as country's most relevant political power. As key participants in the political scene of Yeltsin's transitional Russia, oligarchs such as Hodorkovsky or Prokhorov have accumulated a vast amount of economic and political power during the nineties. Despite the fact that the development path of Russia's oligarchs can fit the general model of post-communist societies, it is necessary to specially refer tothe case of Russian oligarchs because of the global political importance of the state they managed indirectly. This text partially deals with the developmental tendencies of the relations between the government and oligarchic groups, which is especially significant in the light of Putin's new mandate and his attitude towards internal and external factors in Russian politics.
