Abstract
A standing building survey was carried out by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA), on the site of the Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy, formerly the French Hospital, Victoria Park Road, Hackney E9. The survey was commissioned by Willmott Dixon (London Region). The site comprises a group of buildings set within landscaped grounds, and includes the Grade II Listed former hospital building (built in 1865), with its lodge building (rebuilt in the 1930s) and a separate gymnasium to the east of the grounds, built (in 1965). The centre of the site lies at National Grid reference 535865 184064. The investigation took place in September 2013 with intermittent WB in 2014. The main building on the site is the Grade II Listed former French Hospital, designed by R.L. Roumieu and opened in 1866, to house members of the French protestant community living in London. The French Gothic building was designed in the Francis Premier style and housed up to 20 male and 40 female residents and was built in the centre of a three acre park, the western edge of which was bought by the London County Council in the early 1930s. The original lodge house was demolished and rebuilt at this time. After the Second World War the building became a school and a separate gymnasium building was added in 1965.
