Abstract
Korea's Graphic Editorial Design hasreached world-class level. Yet the proportionof design in picture books and the role ofdesigners remain meagre. This studyresearches and analyses the typography andcollage illustrations in Paul Rand's four picturebooks, in order to answer the questionwhether or not picture book illustrators usecommunication designs, such as visual pun, asa means of expressing typography andillustrations. Firstly, Paul Rand's work processand his design philosophy will be studied, andthence his impacts upon picture book designswill be analysed. In conclusion, Paul Rand's innovativegraphic design and philosophy are presentedas visual pun in all four books. His use ofinteresting collage images and typography hasmade those books to appear as one integratedimage. Paul Rand believed that picture bookdesign is a compound of every designcomponent, and that typography is in particularan indispensable element of design process. He produced picture books by employinghumorous visual pun to children's level, andconsequently proposed a completely new andoriginal genre for children's picture books.
