Abstract
Park Chan-wook is a renowned director in South Korea, whose bold creativity as an “Old Boy” in filmmaking has made almost every one of his works exceptional, attracting broad attention and causing extensive discussion at home and abroad. After creating Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, a unique feminist style that had gradually emerged from his works also announced the arrival of a new creative stage for him. In his films, women always have secrets, which are close to human nature. At the same time, there is also a corresponding transformation of the audiovisual style of his films. He changed the former unconventional film language combining the dynamic with the static to the extensive use of Hitchcock style zoom lenses and over-axis lenses, making the film break away from the original feature of narrative first to explore the inherent connotations of personality transformation and growth of the female characters assigned by the lenses instead. With regard to color, he combines classical style with realist style, and continues to apply the filmmaking technique of using repetitive props as metaphors, outlining more profound images of female characters through the interaction of art props and color. Therefore, this paper will take director Park Chan-wook's works under the female perspective as the object of study to look anew his subversive portrayal of male and female characters and presentation of the awakening of female consciousness from the aspects of narrative method and audiovisual language, and summarize the evolution of his filmmaking style.
