Abstract
The purpose of this study is to shed new light on the social responsibility mass media should assume from the standpoint of universally shared values. In addition, the study seeks to clarify the role that the media should play in promoting the development and public interest of society, as well as mutual prosperity among all members of society. To this end, the paper reviews the final report published by the Hutchins Commission: A Free and Responsible Press (Hutchins Report), the first to stipulate social responsibility in the media, as well as the historical development of understanding and discussion of media social responsibilities. 1970s, Sun Myung Moon established the World Media Conference, a gathering of journalists to reflect on the realities of the media in each era, to build solidarity, and together, to find ways to ensure a free and responsible media. Moreover, he encouraged the media to look beyond the existing scope of social responsibility expected of the press in regards to contributing to the development and public interest of society by proposing the universal goal of realizing peace throughout the world for the sake of our global village. Using Sun Myung Moon’s vision of journalism as well as examples of his efforts to make it a reality, this thesis aims to provide a practical and developmental approach that utilizes a co-righteousness view of journalism as an alternative to the limitations of existing media ethics and views.
