건국동맹은 해방 직전 국내에 존재했던 유일의 지하 독립운동 세력이다. 이 건국동맹을 모체로 해서 건국준비위원회와 조선인민공화국이 만들어졌다. 따라서 건국동맹의 성격을 연구하는 것은 해방 후 한국정치를 이해하는데 매우 중요하다. 지금까지 역사학자들은 건국동맹이 공산주의자들과 민족주의자들이 여운형을 중심으로 만든 민족운동단체라고 인식해 왔다. 그렇지만 필자는 이 논문에서 해방 직전의 건국동맹에 대해서 두 가지 문제를 제기하였다. 첫째는 과연 건국동맹이 좌우합작의 민족주의단체인가 하는 점이다. 본 연구에 의하면 건국동맹은 여운형이 중심이 되어 경성콤그룹을 비롯한 공산당 재건위원회 세력과 조동호, 정백 등이 참여하는 공산주의 원로그룹이 함께 조직하였다. 여기에 소위 명망있는 민족주의자들 가운데 참여한 사람은 한 사람도 없다. 따라서 건국동맹을 좌우합작이라고 보는 것은 옳지 못하다. 둘째는 건국동맹이 구상했던 국가는 과연 어떤 국가였는가 하는 점이다. 여운형은 일찍이 공산주의자들에게 인민위원회를 만들자고 제안한 적이 있다. 인민위원회의 설립은 제 7차 코민테른 이후 공산주의자들의 국가건설과정 과정이다. 농민과 노동자가 중심이 되고 소시민과 소자본가가 협력하는 인민전선을 형성하여 인민위원회를 만들고, 인민공화국을 만들자는 것이다. 여운형의 건국구상은 현재 민주공화국을 지향하는 대한민국의 정체성과는 다르다. 결론적으로 여운형의 건국동맹은 공산주의자와 민족주의자가 좌우민족통일전선이 아니라 몇몇 좌익 단체들이 모인 좌익통일전선이며, 이들이 구상한 국가는 인민전선을 형성하여 인민위원회를 통하여 만들어지는 인민공화국이었다.
The National Foundation League(NFL, 건국동맹) was the sole existing domestic underground resistance movement right before the liberation of Korea. Since the Preparatory Committee for National Construction(건국준비위원회) and the People's Republic of Korea(조선인민공화국) was founded on the basis of the NFL, examining the nature of the NFL is essential in understanding Korean politics after the liberation. Historians until now perceived the NFL as a nationalist movement organization led by communists and nationalists, with Yeo Un-hyeong as its central figure. However this article brings forth two issues regarding the NFL. Firstly, whether the league was indeed a nationalist organization based on a left-right coalition needs careful investigation. As examined in this study, the NFL was organized by Yeo Un-hyeong with the Communist Party Reconstruction Committee such as Gyeongseong Communist Group as its members and the Communist elderly group in which Cho Dong-ho and Jung Beak participated. Since not one nationalist with a high reputation have participated in the League, it is inappropriate to regard the NFL as a left-right coalition. Secondly, the kind of state which the NFL envisioned also needs further examination. Yeo Un-hyeong formerly proposed the communists to make a People's Committee. The establishment of People's Committee is included in the nation-building process of communists. With farmers and labourers in the center and the co-operation of the petty bourgeois and capitalists, they intended to form a People's Front which will eventually evolve into a People's Committee and consequently into a People's Republic. This vision of Yeo Un-hyeong is considerably different from the current legitimacy of the Republic of Korea, aiming for a Democratic Republic. In conclusion, the NFL of Yeo Un-hyeong was not a left-right coalition of communists and nationalists but a leftist united front, and the state they envisioned was a people's republic which was to be established through a people's committee formed by a people's front.
