Abstract
The past North Korean cities have been planned and managed as the space which symbolizes socialism and place of life and refinement that residents’ collective labor, collaborative learning, and communal life are done. However, The general directions of the North Korean cities and city construction that the Kim Jung-un regime seized power have recently changed. North Korea has put establishment of scientist districts and housing provision of scientists and educators that symbolize the knowledge economic era ahead of everything aiming at Pyeongyang’s modernization. It has concentrated on cultural facilities and physical plants which will enhance socialistic civilized country’s position and pursued external changes as the modern city which follows world trends in the public construction field. North Korean cities and city construction focuses on external changes because industrial production systems have not been normalized, internal economic reforms have been delayed, and the limit has not been solved. Therefore, city construction’s directions have been arranged to preparation of the environment and conditions which are advantageous to trade openness and public institutions in cities have been commercialized including connection of them to the tourist industry and expansion of commercial facilities.
