With the diversification of materials in the collective housing, radical developments are also being made in the processing technology of materials. Therefore, the characteristics of material survey and method were extracted for about 20 French collective housings. The results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that the homogeneous and formative beauty of the shape was maintained as the wall and the building elements were integrated with a single material. Second, when various materials were used, the material combination method was coordinated differently for each area, indicating the distinctive originality of the collective housing. Third, the intrinsic properties of the material were revealed, and the surface effect was changed perceptually by applying the construction method and the connecting method differently. Fourth, the aesthetic effect, the view, and the maintenance of privacy were being realized at the same time by reducing the weight of the material and diversifying the processing method considering the view on the balcony. Fifth, it was shown that the boundaries between generations are realized by concise detail and light materials, maintaining the plasticity of the whole form. Sixth, it was been used lightweight materials rather than heavy and sturdy materials. As a result of the study, the material of the French collective housing shows that the characteristics of use should be actively reflected based on rationality and functionality, not just external finish. This should lead to the perspective of improving the future housing type and housing culture, and should continue with the residents-oriented material use system.
