Abstract
This study aims to examine and focus on how Chinese martial arts have developed in the pre-modern Song and Yuan dynasty and how the developmental milieu in martial arts have made martial arts an essential part of Chinese culture and to examine the different varieties and types of martial arts. Hence, deducing that the core of Chinese martial arts lies in the Song and Yuan dynasty, the study aims to analyze the development of Chinese martial arts. In such relation, the following conclusions have been derived. Firstly, due to long wars in the Song and Yuan period, ancient martial arts have been systematized to develop into military martial arts, originating different trainings for different styles of martial arts as the identity of Chinese martial arts have become patent, facilitating the development of ancient martial arts and making it apparent that it had been a major contribution in Chinese history. Secondly, preceding the Song dynasty, martial art mechanisms made no difference to the actual weapons, however it is apparent that practical military martial arts was introduced in the Song dynasty through Sibpalbanmuye(十八般武藝). Thirdly, the Song and Yuan dynasty was a period when private martial arts organizations had significantly amplified and emerged allowing specializations in martial arts and befitting martial arts into an occupation making it a time in history when martial arts had settled into Chinese culture. In particular, through the culture of commercial markets, the emergence of martial arts such as Washe(瓦舍) and Goulan(勾欄) in Chinese culture can be seen that it had a profound impact on the development of Chinese martial arts in the private sector.
