Abstract
Society has undeniable doubts about the ethics of business and management. This may be a natural phenomenon due to the nature of the enterprise for profit seeking. But now, the business world is strongly demanding corporations to take responsibility as citizens, and companies struggle to survive when these responsibilities are not met. Many companies emphasize the importance of the morality of top executives and managers which encourages diverse institutions to control ethical behavior and practices of their members. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the answers to the following questions. First, what role does psychological empowerment play in the relationship between ethical leadership and employees’ organizational commitment and trust in leaders? Second, how does ethical efficacy influence the relationship between ethical leadership and psychological empowerment? Results of the regression is an analyses from a survey data from 120 employees in 12 pharmaceutical company sales staffs’, ethical leadership has both direct and indirect influence on follower organizational commitment and trust in leaders. The indirect effect of ethical leadership involves shaping perceptions of psychological empowerment, which in turn, engender greater organizational commitment and trust in leaders. However, interaction effect of ethical leadership and ethical efficacy do not show significant effect on psychological empowerment. Some implications, future research directions, and study limitations were discussed.
