Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make clear about Philanthropism and its implication for elementary education. Philanthropism is that the educational thought which make real educationa based on natural approach of Rousseau. Johann Bernhard Basedow(1724), German educational reformer is the leader of Philanthropism. He proposed the school reform and realistic method instruction. And he estalbished an institute called Philanthropium for education at Dessau and he wrote Elementrawerk to propose new contents and methods on elementary education. This study was researched by investigating Philanthropinum and Elementrawerk that Basedow established based on philosophical bacground and basic understanding about Philanthropism. Philanthropic thought on 18th century influences modern elementary education in many ways. In light of educational purpose, that advocate child’s happiness and intelligence of the pupils influence modern elementary education. In respect of educational contents, children should get a complete development with the harmony body, mind, intelligence in elementary education. It also emphasized contacting with realities, not with just written words as educational method in modern elementary education.
