Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop and justify the achievement motivation scale for Chinese college students by applying the widely accepted achievement motivation theory in China. The subjects of this study were university students at China's four-year universities, and data were collected from 688 university students to develop a measure of achievement motivation for Chinese university students. The achievement motivation scale developed in this study is consisted of 4 sub-factors: 9 individual-oriented success-seeking motivation, 9 social-oriented success-seeking motivation, 10 individual-oriented failure-avoidance motivation, and 8 social-oriented failure-avoidance motivation. The total number of questions was 36. As a result of verifying the reliability of the achievement motivation scale, the Cronbach's α coefficient of all four components was 0.9 or higher, confirming that it was a very good measure of reliability. In addition, the validity of the developed scale was confirmed through construct validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity.
