Abstract
This paper presents a methodology to evaluate the scalability and performance of split-shaft wind energy conversion systems based on a hydraulic transmission system. First, for such a system, the system principles and elements efficiency are explained in detail, and the effect of various parameters on the efficiency and power loss is evaluated. Finally, a 1.5 MW hydraulic wind turbine as a base model is simulated under various generator speeds, various gearbox ratios, and various operating points of pressure. Also, the pipeline diameter and displacement of hydraulic machinery are investigated to show the scalability of such a drivetrain. The result demonstrates that by choosing the proper pipeline diameter, generator speed, gearbox ratio, and nominal operating pressure, the feasibility of the large-scale split-shaft wind energy conversion system is achievable.
