Abstract
It is noted that, traditionally, engineering research and engineering education have focused on improved methods of managing and disposing of waste. The authors propose that engineering education be refocused to also develop engineers capable of designing waste minimization into manufacturing and construction at the front end. Examples of new technologies designed to reduce volume and toxicity of waste products show that economic and environmental benefits can be achieved from this approach.ETX
