Abstract
A mathematical model has been designed for a Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) using Matlab / Simulink environment. Normally, a model simulates only a specific number of stator and rotor poles but in this paper a general model is considered and the simulation is performed with various number of stator and rotor poles. Both linear and nonlinear model are developed and the simulation studies are performed. The selection criteria for the stator and rotor pole arcs are incorporated into the machine design by computing the minimum stator pole arcs and rotor pole arcs to achieve self starting requirement. The negative torque generated during the motoring region is avoided by selecting suitable stator and rotor pole arcs. It also helps to minimize the ripples in instantaneous torque produced during each excited phase winding.
