Abstract
This paper presents a study of beam brightness of a rf ion source of the radial extraction type. It is shown that the use of electron beam injection into the source's plasma improves beam brightness Bn possibly due to the decrease of electron temperature of the plasma. Analysis is also given of other factors which affect beam brightness such as aberration occuring in the extraction cathode lens which is reduced by use of thin lens together with proper shaping of the extraction electrode, and electron interaction with the ion beam to reduce space charge effect in the beam.
