Abstract
A microgrid is a localized energy system that can function independently from the traditional power grid by utilizing various distributed energy resources making it a complex cyber-physical system. It is a popular and reliable source of energy for many facilities and communities. However, as microgrids become more interconnected and digitized, they are at risk of cyber attacks. Unfortunately, studying the cybersecurity of microgrids in real-world settings is challenging due to the lack of practical equipment. To address this issue, we have partnered with industrial leaders such as ABB, Moxa, and GE to create a hybrid microgrid lab testbed to better understand cybersecurity threats and develop an IDS/IPS system to detect potential risks, including GOOSE attacks.
