Abstract
This paper presents important aspects of the implementation of a real microgrid applied to a rural distribution Brazilian system. This pilot microgrid was the first one allowed to operate in either the connected or the islanded mode in Brazil, with the islanded operation being its main novelty. The microgrid is composed of about 7 km of primary level distribution cables (34.5kV) guaranteeing power supply to four external consumers by one biogas Distributed Generation unit during power outages. It was built on top of a pre-existing distribution system and its control arrangement uses equipment already installed in the original network (such as reclosers, genset controllers, and protective relays). The paper covers the full project, encompassing design, real-time simulation, implementation, and field monitoring of the microgrid data.
