Abstract
The rising trend of solar photovoltaic penetration in active distribution networks leads to voltage violations, especially over-voltage problems. As a possible solution to this issue, the IEEE 1547-2018 standard mandates smart inverter voltage regulation functions, such as constant power factor, Volt/Var control, Active-reactive power control, and Volt/Watt control, in high-penetration networks. However, due to the low X/R ratio in the distribution network, the voltage magnitude gets coupled with both active and reactive power. Hence, using any specific voltage regulation function poses a challenge to achieving effective voltage regulation. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach based on the analytical voltage sensitivity analysis for selecting suitable smart inverter voltage regulation functions. Further, the proposed method improves the solar photovoltaic hosting capacity and the smart inverter utilization factor while mitigating over-voltages.
