Abstract
This paper presents a novel harmonic propagation model for the analysis of harmonic propagation in meshed transmission networks. This method is based on electromagnetic waves and uses scattering parameters known from microwave theory. The physical understanding of harmonic distribution in a power system is achieved. Changes may be quantified, and the method is validated against both physical harmonic distortion measurements and simulations. This method differs from traditional analysis methods in that the propagation pathways, as well as the contribution of individual sources to the propagated harmonic voltage in the entire network, can be determined unambiguously, allowing the influence of grid changes on the harmonic voltage to be predicted.
