Abstract
This study explores relevant design issues for real-time optimal multi-traffic signal decision mechanisms by using cellular computational networks for safer, economical, and sustainable operations. Adaptive, intelligent, and related research outcomes for traffic signal management systems are presented for their characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. A typical traffic signal management implementation is analyzed, in terms of variables, operational dynamics, control and optimization mechanisms, and management perspectives. Relevant traffic management system design considerations for the cellular computational networks are developed and presented. The design considerations confirm the plausibility of the cellular computational network systems in globally-optimized locally-distributed real-time traffic signal operations.
