Abstract
This electronic document discusses the potential and challenges in grid integration of offshore wind energy in the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Based on the top potential zone rich in offshore wind in both the states identified in the Pre-Feasibility study report conducted by FOWIND a consortium to facilitate offshore wind in India, a preliminary grid evacuation study was performed by TANGEDCO and GETCO on the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The load flow study indicated comfortable evacuation of 500 MW of offshore wind in each of the two states. However the author here presents additional challenges identified based on the available grid data including planned transmission expansion projects, existing onshore wind, solar and other transmission details. The objective is to bring forth primary focus to the policy makers regarding offshore wind evacuation. Also, the paper intends to highlight the general technical and non-technical challenges and recommendations to benefit from the opportunities in the industry on a grid integration perspective on the Indian context.
