Abstract
With the increased growth in scale and complexity of data, it is becoming more difficult for companies to maintain, manage and process their data to extract value using traditional architectures as large storage and computational power is required. Cloud computing steps in and proposes a whole infrastructure for the same while eliminating the need to maintain costly hardware and dedicated space and provisions scalable services in terms of infrastructure, platform and software. This work, therefore, reviews and assesses the direct linkage between the Big Data and the Cloud in terms of technologies, tools, platforms and resources while providing an overview of how big data can be gathered through the cloud and the applicability of the different service and deployment models with regards to big data analytics with a major focus on the advantages of moving to the cloud such as scalability, low latency and high availability. Furthermore, different cloud service providers’ offering for transforming data into insights are assessed and the challenges posed by the cloud and its implementation for Big Data solutions are looked at in terms of privacy and security.
