Abstract
Additive manufacturing, specifically Fused Filament Fabrication is a widely used and affordable layer-based manufacturing process that is also capable of multi-material printing. The honeycomb sandwich structures can be fabricated by multi-material fused filament fabrication to acquire desirable material properties and minimize weight which is essential in the automotive and aerospace industry. This study aims to examine the flexural properties of the mono-material and multi-material sandwich structures, particularly Honeycomb, Rectangular Horizontal, and Rectangular Vertical. The materials selected for the experiment are polylactic acid (Ultimaker PLA Green) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (Ultimaker ABS Red). According to the results of the three-point bending test, the highest flexural strength and elastic modulus were achieved by the Honeycomb configuration for mono-material PLA and ABS as well as ABSPLA-ABS structures. As for the PLA-ABS-PLA sandwich parts, the best flexural performance was exhibited by the Rectangular Vertical configuration.
