Abstract
This paper is dedicated to researching the occurrence of NSDDs, reignition and restrike in switchgear. Various experiments have been carried out illustrating the behavior of switchgear when interrupting capacitive loads. A large number of experiments show that when interrupting capacitive currents, this type of phenomena can occur randomly, and that after current interruption, the peak value of the transient recovery voltage is double the normal value. During the numerical simulations, through the usual modelling, the expected phenomena (reignition, restrike or NSDDs) were not evident, showing that these phenomena are strongly dependent on the design of the individual switchgear, the material of contacts, surface finish and cleanliness of the extinguishing medium.
