Abstract
We develop a method for atraumatic fixation of the intestinal wall with the aim to obtain real-time artefact-free structural and angiographic Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT and OCTA) images. A special cap was designed to be put on the end of the OCT probe, and connected to the medical suction pump to create a vacuum space. Testing of the vacuum cap on the wall of the small intestine of mini pigs allowed us to reduce the number of motion artifacts in OCT images compared to manual fixation from 84% to 8% and to obtain high-quality structural and angiographic OCT images in 92% of cases. We suggest that the new method of local atraumatic fixation of intestinal tissues may open up new possibilities for the use of OCT/OCTA in abdominal surgical interventions.
