Abstract
We have proposed and developed a new 3D display, called an “edge-based” depth-fused 3D (DFD) display, which is composed of a projected 2D image of the desired 3D image and its edge image with a gap. This edge-based DFD display solves three problems in conventional DFD display. A conventional DFD display controls perceived depth by changing the luminance ratio between two overlapping images with the same shape. The first problem is the occurrence of obscure double imaging and an inappropriate luminance distribution outside the area of overlap. The second and third problems are a narrow viewing angle and restricted maximum perceived depth. The edge-based DFD display changes the perceived depth by changing the luminance of only the edge image. This solves the first problem because one image is always a clear 2D image. The second and third problems are solved by utilizing head movements and blurring of the edge image.
